FREESTYLE BACK TO THRILL
They're the band to beat when it comes to r&b music. They're also the
band to beat when it comes to concert and gig and circuits aside of
course from other bands as South border, Side A, and their ilk. With
piracy scourge, the music, plus the fact that record companies are
cutting cost to make both ends meet internally. But like they say, a
good band never goes out of style with or without these problems. They
just keep on coming back. Such is the case of freestyle. But what is
the band up to these days? We caught up with freestyle's manager
recently, and begged him to let freestyle answer some of our question
for us.. Read on...........
Since your last album, what has freestyle been up?
-Well, we were in the US twice (Sept./Oct and
June/July). We has shows for our kabayans in Chicago, Atlantic City,
Washington, Reno, New York LA and San Francisco. We had so much fun
making new friends. It was the first time we traveled as a group
abroad so there were lot of funny experiences. Then last December we
went to Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. Sobrang enjoy din kasi iba
rin ang buhay at experiences ng mga kababayan natin doon.
And we also had our first major concert at the Araneta Coliseum in
October 2000 with our idols GaryV., Pops Fernandez and Andrew E. Since
then we've had our love concert with Zsa Zsa Padillia and Lani, the
all hits Concert with Ogie Alcasid and Aiza, Symphony in F with the
San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra, Bituin Escalante, and Anna Fegi and
back to back concerts with Side A. so we have been really busy.
How has the band matured since then?
--A lot, kasi it's been 3 years since the last studio
album. Our first ever major concert at Araneta was recorded live and
released that was our third album.) Hopefully musically nag-mature din
kami.
How has the "Freestyle crowd" changed since your first and
second albums?
--Actually, nakakatawa nga kasi ngayon ang daming
bagets nanonood sa mga shows namin. 'Yung iba nanonood sa amin since
before 'andyan parin. Naging barkada na nga namin.
What has the band been listening to as a precursor to the
making of the new album?
--To a lot of artist, 'yung mga bagong R&B (Ashanti,
Craig David,Joe). Incognito, Norah Jones, Sade, D' Sound, Yolanda
Adams, JhonB., John Mayer.
Are you trying to duplicate the sucess of the debut effort in
every new album that you make?
--We don't want to be pressured by the fact that
album has to be a hit. We write songs from the heart and based on
whatever experiences we have been through. If it clicks with the
listening public then we're happy and grateful.
What's the theme of your new album? How does this new album
differ from the last two?
--Wala namang theme or concept, basta we write songs
that please us, based on the recent experiences, or experiences of
close friends and family. Siguro because of the number of years that
went by you will hear a certain maturity in the lyrics.
The Industry has been so gloomy lately. How did the band cope
with downtime which is mostly caused by the "piracy" problem?
--Hayy! ang laking problema talaga ng piracy! Dapat
talaga mapreso na ang mga pirata! Masuwerte nga kami na meron kaming
loyal supporters na palagaing 'andyan at nanonood pa rin, bumibili pa
rin nga ng mga CDs at tapes namin. Sobra-sobra ang support for us.
Can you tell us something about your new first single "To Love
Me"? You have a very funny video, who conceptualized it?
--It's basically saying that if you can't be true or
honest with me then its better that we part. It's useless for two
person cannot be honest and truthful enough to tell the other person
that there is no more love, or that only one half is still in love.
The video was conceptualized by our director Robert Quebral. We agree
it was really funny. It's about letting go of all the baggage in your
life once you're done with a relationship.
What's the story about behind your new Close-Up song?
--This song was recorded in L.A last July 13. It was
an experience for us kasi, that was the first time nag-record kami
outside the country. The lyrics were written in New York. Nakana!!!!hehehhehe.....
Made in the U.S. iba ang dating di ba?
Message to your Fans?
--Salamat!salamat!salamat!!!!! Sa lahat ng suporta!!!!!!
Sana 'andyan parin kayo sa mga susunod na taon!!!
